Coping with an anxious child can be a challenge to any parent, no matter how equipped we may think we are to handle any of our child’s problems.
Children need to learn early on how to deal with what stresses them, and it’s the job of a parent to help them navigate through their feelings and teach them good habits.
As parents, we want to protect our children from anything that threatens to hurt them, but anxiety is a beast they need to learn to conquer on their own.
You can still help them through their anxious moments, here are some useful phrases to keep in mind:
- You’re safe
- You’re loved
- This feeling will go away
- You are brave for telling me about this
- Worrying is normal, I do it too
- Let’s go for a walk
- Take deep breaths
- I’m here
- How can I help you?
- We’ll get through this together
